He was a major source of inspiration for other authors within the thriller genre, such as Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, and John le Carre. 'Dirty Story', also published as 'This Gun For Hire', follows the life of anti-hero Arthur Abdel Simpson after his initial introduction in 'The Light of Day&apos. In this thriller, Simpson is forced to become a mercenary for a Central African mining company after facing the prospect of becoming a penniless exile.
